Wildwood, NJ 2009 Race Results

Since 2001, under Event Coordinator Ann Fitzgerald, the APBA Inboard category has brought their racing crafts to the Wildwoods Hydrofest. Racing five blocks west of the Atlantic Ocean on the bay area known as Sunset Lake, this nine-year event held in Wildwood Crest, New Jersey, is one to circle on the racers calendar.

Sunset Lake is a natural racing venue giving race fans full view of an approximate one-mile race course. The ten blocks that border the bay are converted in a race site consisting of 6 blocks of Marketplace and 4 blocks of a protected fenced pit area.

The 2009 race was special with the first New Jersey Governor's Cup awarded to the weekends combined top performer and the Inboard North American Championships.

The North American Championships were scheduled for Saturday, October 10, but 25 to 30 mph west winds made for white caps on the surface of Sunset Lake; dangerous racing conditions forced the committee to cancel Saturday's racing. Sunday, October 11, was Chamber of Commerce weather--sunny skies and a nip of wind made the North American Championship race day a cool crisp Autumn-like day for the thousands of fans on the shoreline.

Eight Inboard Classes were in Wildwood Crest; however, only five classes qualified for the North American Championships due to the four-boat legal starter rule. Classes eligible were 1.5 Litre Stock, 2.5 Litre Stock, 5 Litre, Jersey Speed Skiff, and Pro Stock.

Those five classes would also battle for the New Jersey Governor's Cup trophy. The NJ Governor's Cup guidelines require the first heat of the weekend for each class to have at least five legal starters in order to be eligible. The New Jersey Governor's Cup is based on best overall performance for the weekend and ties are broken by the driver who comes closet to or exceeds the one-mile course competition record in the APBA Inboard category.

Four drivers were tied with two wins each. Michael Smith in PS-24, Brandon Kennedy in T-1, Marc Theoret in CS-444, and David Greenlaw & Bobby Kennedy in JS-99.

The state of New Jersey was represented by Chief Of Staff Wali Abdul-Salaam for Governor Jon Corzine. Mr. Abdul-Salaam and Ann Fitzgerald presented the first New Jersey Governor's Cup to David Greenlaw, Jr. and Bobby Kennedy from the JS-99 Veri Cheri team. It was a special win for the Veri Cheri team, owned by the legendary championship racer, Dave Greenlaw, Sr.

Results below are from the final heats of the North American Championships.

Jersey Speed Skiff

1st: JS-99, David Greenlaw & Bobby Kennedy

2nd: JS-13, Tom Pakradooni & Patrick Dender

3rd: JS-9, Robert Presley & Kenny Walton

The first heat for the Jersey Speed Skiffs had eight boats answer the start. Greenlaw in lane two led the field into the first turn. In lane one, Jimmie Stewart & Peg Ewancio in the JS-100, Summer Storm, lost handle of the craft and started to drift into the racing lanes of others in turn one--a chain reaction resulted. T.J. Sohn and Rob Flayhart in the JS-66, owned by Mitch Brown, got catapulted into a barrel roll. Two other boats got caught in the mix and had to withdraw from the competition re-start--Rob Garratano & Keith McMullen in the JS-62 Smoke On The Water and Mark Johnson and Robert Wood in JS-6 Built For Pleasure. A scary looking incident saw no serious injuries occur but it wiped out half the field of Jersey Speed Skiffs.

In the re-start and final it was all Greenlaw and Kennedy in the 99; the Veri Cheri had pressure, however, on the outside wake from Bill Darby's JS-13 Darby's Rapture "GEICO".

Pro Stock

1st: PS-24, Michael Smith

2nd: PS-122, Dominic Cournoyer

3rd: PS-100, Kenny Walton

Michael Smith won twice but it was not with ease as pressure was exerted from veteran David Paraskevas in Hank and Peggy Wendt's PS-529. Paraskevas led early on in the heat race but rough water slowed the 529 half way up the back chute; he settled for second behind Smith. In the final, Paraskevas had a great start and a nice lead, but half way through the heat, Paraskevas pulled into the infield and shut down for a DNF and Smith soaring to the win.

1.5 Litre Stock

1st: T-1, Brandon Kennedy

2nd: T-5, Jimmy McMullen

3rd: T-24, Kenny Walton

Brandon Kennedy won twice. The heat race was an easy win with Brandon being the only legal starter; the other pilots were itchy on the throttle to the line and it resulted in all of them getting a gun-jumping penalty.    In the final, Kennedy had to work his way through the field and won at the last second with a boat length win over Steve Armstrong in the CT-11.

2.5 Litre Stock

1st: CS-444, Marc Theoret

2nd: CS-00, Kent Henderson

3rd: S-999, Kenny Walton

Eleven 2.5's tried the waters of Sunset Lake. Heat 1-A was Bobby Kennedy winning in the S-88 Playin' Again; Jimmy McMullen was second with S-76, Back 'N Blue; Robert Wood took third in the S-69.

Heat 1-B was Marc Theoret winning over Kent Henderson and Kenny Walton.

The final had Theoret in lane one with Kennedy in lane two. Theoret had the better start leading wire to wire in the final. Kennedy chased Theoret closely but in turn two of lap three, his S-88 hit some rough water and hooked. Kennedy re-started, but finished off the podium. The S-88 owned by Sam and Yvonne Horner will travel to Morgan City, LA next weekend to keep their points lead in the 2.5 Litre Stock.

5 Litre

1st: E-816, Tom Thompson

2nd: E-50, Scott Liddycoat

3rd: E-43 Jim Martin

Eleven 5's were in the Wildwoods and as usual, the 5 Litres were true to their reputation!

Heat 1-A was 5 Litre point contender Jim Martin winning in his E-43 over Bert Henderson in CE-8; Marc LeCompte took third in CE-104. Martin, who led the entire heat, is in a tight 5 Litre point battle with the Weber brothers E-55 My Way with pilots Jeff Bernard and Kip Brown. Those two hulls and teams will be in Morgan City, LA next weekend to decide the 5 Litre 2009 points championship.

Heat 1-B was wild with penalties. Ghislain Marcoux in E-666 won 1-B but in dare-devil fashion. Marcoux rode the roostertail of Joe Less in E-500 in turn two on lap one; the bright orange craft had the crowd wide-eyed as it wavered up on the spray of water behind the E-500. He landed and made a recovery to finish with a win. Bill Chew was penalty free in E-48 finishing second. Joe Less, the physical winner, settled for third after a one minute penalty.

In the final heat Tom Thompson in E-816 starting in lane one took this one all the way in front. Plenty of action took place behind Thompson for the other positions. Jim Martin came across the start/line in last and then worked his way through the field finishing third. Scott Liddycoat took the E-50 Proptalk/The Mistress  through the field to second. Liddycoat driving for Ralph Cattaneo and Wheeler Baker will travel to Morgan City, LA next weekend for the Worlds. Wheel informed me he is going to Morgan City to watch the GP's but I noticed a smile when he said the E-50 is going so that his 5 Litre can contend for a world title too.

1 Litre, National Modified, and Grand National Hydroplanes were in Wildwood but not enough legal starters to begin the weekend took their classes out of the North American championship races. Their classes did race though on Sunset Lake.

Joe Sovie in his 1 Litre Y-44 won twice. Local pilot George Conover from Egg Harbor Township, NJ swept both NM and GNH. Conover has two sweet hulls in both classes.

The 2010 date has not been set for the tenth Wildwoods Hydrofest but when it is scheduled it will be highlighted on a lot of the racers calendar.

Wrap-Up, 2009 Thunder In The Hills
Thanks Jeff Ayler
37 racing hulls and seven vintage crafts gathered at Rocky Fork State Park seven miles east of Hillsboro, Ohio for the 2009 Thunder In The Hills. Since the year 2000, 18 competition records have been broken on the 1-1/4 mile race course Rocky Fork Lake water. It was the 22nd annual event conducted by the Southern Ohio Power Boat Association.
Weather all weekend was gorgeous for the last weekend of August 2009 with temperatures in the upper 60's to lower 70's both days. A northwest wind did affect the water conditions Saturday (8/29/2009) at the end of back chute and the entire length of turn two. Winds dimenished Sunday (8/30/2009) for more favorable water to maybe see some new speed records set.
1 Litre
Seven Y's were in Rocky Fork with all eyes on Jim & Jewel Sechler's Y-1 Fast Eddie Too with Dan Kanfoush in the cockpit. Kanfoush, drove well but did not dominate the entire weekend in 1 Litre. Kanfoush won twice with a gun jump one heat and a bad start in the other. The team saved the best for last in the Sunday final coming closet to setting a record in Hillsboro. The 1 Litre record speed is 89.771 MPH with Kanfoush pressing the record the first two laps but back marker water made the course rough falling two seconds short of a record.
Joe Sovie in Y-44 Accelerant, scored a win to begin the weekend in thrilling fashion coming from behind splitting Sean Bowsher in Y-52 Roostertails. net and Scott Liddycoat in Y-97 Team Extreme with 1-1/2 laps to go. Bowsher was second followed by Kanfoush and Liddycoat.
Sean Bowsher won the Sunday opener with Keith McMullen in second aboard Y-80 Leo's Vacation Center with Doug Simpson third in Y-126 Shattered Savings. Gun jumps at the start by Kanfoush, Sovie, and Liddycoat took them out of the top three.
Scott Liddycoat claimed lane one four times during the weekend in the cool designed Y-97. The new team is a new threat in 1 Litre with Joe Cheezum helping turning the wrenches with the Yamaha power plant.
2.5 Litre Modified
Once again in Rocky Fork brings the best of the best in 2.5 Litre Modified. Eight hulls were in the pits with Randy English's A-52 Fat Chance III along with three Don Mashburn "NAVY FLEET" hulls from Lafayette, LA and Debbie Welte's A-23 leading the charge handicapping on paper.
Tom Thompson's APBA Hall of Champion 2009 season continues with three wins at Rocky Fork. The only blemish was the Sunday heat race. Thompson completed the first two laps at one minute and twenty nine seconds with record time being 2:52 on a 1-1/4 mile track. In turn one working lap three the A-52 slowed with a reported later rudder problem. When Thompson failed to finish and Dan Kanfoush jumping the gun in A-600 Mr Bud it gave Andrew Christopher his first Inboard heat win the Mr. Bud A-60.
Dan Kanfoush was solid in the A-600 with three seconds and one third on Rocky Fork Lake.
5 Litre
Ten 5 Litre's was the largest class turn out in Hillsboro with elimination heats set for both days of racing.
Saturday in 1-A it was Tom English winning with his E-75 Fat Chance III. English has made wonderful starts the entire 2009 season. 1-B was taken wire to wire by Jim Martin in E-43 Keen's Machine.
The Saturday evening final was all Jim Martin winning. Todd Liddycoat was second in the E-97 Team Extreme with Tom English in third.
Heat 1-A Sunday was Jim Martin scoring another win with Heat 1-B going to Todd Liddycoat in Liddycoat lane one fashion for the four laps.
Sunday's final heat saw the entire fleet early to the start except for Randy Bushaw in the E-76 Flash Back. At first by the naked eye it looked like the only legal starter was last place Randy Bushaw in the E-76 Flash Back with the possibility of seven boats over at the start. Physical postioning saw Todd Liddycoat lead early and then being passed by Tom Thompson in E-816 Batt Boat completing lap number two. Thompson held on for the win over Jim Martin who whittled his way through the field from one point in position seven up the second. Thompson and Martin were legal starters holding position on the track. Four drivers jumped the gun. In order third to sixth being Todd Liddycoat, Billy Wichers, Colby Denman, and Tom English. Physical seventh finisher Cheryl Bruns moved up to third place in E-6 Quantam Leap Racing.
2.5 Litre Stock
Not your typical Rocky Fork 2.5 Litre Stock turn out with six teams taking to the record water course.
The weekend began with Bobby Kennedy leading early in S-88 Playin' Again. On lap number two the hard charging Dutch Squires in S-83 Mega Bucks came to life making the pass and taking the heat win. Kennedy then was passed for second by Keith Anderson in the S-17 Bad Habbit with Kennedy fading to third.
The Saturday final saw Bobby Kennedy in lane one leading early with Dutch Squires pursuing in second. Squires eventual made the pass for first but exiting turn one working lap number three the smoke came out of engine. Squire's oil plug came loose draining oil from the engine coming to a halt ending their weekend of racing.
Kennedy made the pass for the win followed by Keith Anderson and Joe Krietzer in Terry Amanti's S-58 Challenger.
Sunday in the heat race it was Bobby Kennedy leading early at one point by up to 15 boat lengths but Keith Anderson kept making up ground and passed Kennedy with one half lap to go claiming 100 points. Kennedy was second followed by Kreitzer.
In the final Bobby Kennedy took the win. Keith Anderson did not make the best start but did finish second with Krietzer in third.
National Modified and Grand National Hydroplane Combined
Jimmy Deel won the opener in GNH-8 Deel Me In over Jack Meyer in the local Hillsboro, Ohio based NM-333 Got-cha! owned by Paul and Wahnita Yinger with Tom Newman third in the local sponsored C103 Country 103.1 FM NM-100.
Jimmy Deel took the final and Jack Meyer looked to be second again but 75 yards from the finish the 368 C.I. engine of the NM-333 went away scoring a DNF. Tom Bergman was second in the Mike Cashin NM-888 with Tom Newman in third.
Tom Bergman took the water once alone on Sunday with Deel, Meyer, and Newman's crafts being scratched for Sunday.
Lite 97.5 WVNU provided live audio coverage of the event all weekend long. Its was 97.5's 14th consecutive year of live coverage of the Thunder In The Hills. Congratulations goes out to Station Manager Pat Hayes and his staff.

Planning any boat race is a major undertaking. Planning a Summer National Championship on an Army base makes the amount of planning increase exponentially. In addition to having to prepare and submit a bid to the IRC a year or two in advance, you also have to deal with all the rules and regulations set forth by the Army. Now throw in the fact that after you had your bid accepted, the economy went bad, and you begin to appreciate all the efforts that the Virginia Boat Racing Association put into the 2009 Hampton Cup Regatta.

Throughout the day, on Thursday, race teams rolled into the pits on historic Fort Monroe. Early on, it was evident that the 2.5 stock class would have a good field. By 5 p.m., there were already a dozen boats in the pit area. Chief Inspector, Sid Johnson, and his crew made sure every boat was in good seaworthy condition. Old friendships were renewed, and new friends were made. It was great to see several teams from the west coast, I have read about many of these people in the Propeller or on the internet, but it was nice to be able to put faces with the names. Hopefully, we will have more opportunities to race against, and spend time with, these people in the future.

Friday morning, the pits were unusually quiet. Due to a ceremony where one of the members of our Army was promoted to the rank of General, the base was locked down from 7:30 AM until the completion of the ceremony. Registration was completed and the drivers meeting was held during this time. Owners and drivers handled the delay well, despite the pressure of having to qualify for the Nationals, and not knowing if your engine would start. About 10 seconds after the announcement that engines could be started, about 80% of them fired up. The race committee opened testing to boats by class, each class had 5 minutes to take a lap or two and check out the course and their equipment.

Due to a less than ideal weather forecast, the committee decided to run the classes that required eliminations first, and then try to get as many heats as possible in before the wind and rain arrived. Most classes had good fields, the numbers are as follows 1.5 Litre Stock - 6 boats , 1 Litre - 8 boats, 2.5 Stock - 15 boats, 2.5 Litre Mod - 11 boats, 5 Litre - 10 boats, NM - 5 boats, GNH -1 boat, JS- 10 boats. With lots of room on the Mill Creek course, each class would be able to run the maximum number of boats allowed by the rule book for their final heat.

In the 2.5 Stocks it was clear that there were several very good boats, Kent Henderson’s CS-00, Mike Hofhne’s S-12, Sid Johnson’s S-14, Tina Wilson’s S-20, Doug Martin’s S-33, Scott Meyer’s S-81 , Sam Horner’s S-88 and Alan Bush’s S-711, were all dialed in. Whoever won the battle for starting position, hit the start and got through turn one clean would be hard to pass. Friday’s qualifiers were won by Jeff Bernard driving Hofhne’s S-12 and Jimmy Shane driving Johnson’s S-14.

The 2.5 mod field was the strongest I have seen in several years. Five Spider’s (3 Mashburn & 2 English) were challenged by a Henderson, Pfaff, Kelson, Isaac, Aid, and Staudacher. The winers of the first round of qualifiers were Jim Aid (A-33) and Tom Thompson (Randy English’s A-52.) Hats off to Buster Graham who was able to avoid a collision with Dan Kanfoush after Dan’s A-600 lost the bracket that holds the skid fin in place, lap one, turn one. L.E. Outlaw, driving Clarence Pfaff’s A-19 punched a hole in the bellypan causing the “A-Team” to withdraw from further competition. A-37 “Sonic Speed” owned by Bill McGowan and driven by Paul Brockson, received some damage to the hull and was finished for the weekend.

By the time the 5 Litre’s ran, the wind was starting to build and the front stretch was getting rough. The winner of the first heat was Scott Liddycoat in Ralph Cataneo’s E-50 with a time of 3:32.26. Mark Burghardt’s E-726, “X-ray”, the Eastern Divisionals Champion was plagued by engine gremlins he prevented him from performing to his usual high standard. L. E. Outlaw’s E-310 “Miss Outlaw” tore the bottom of the back of the boat during the heat spreading oodles of noodles around the race course, causing the team to withdraw for the weekend. L. E. has the dubious honor of sinking boats in consecutive heats. The second heat was won by Jeff Bernard in E-55 with a time of 3:36.75.

With the damage to L.E. Outlaw’s boat, the National Mods were down to four boats, but what a show. It ended up looking like 2 separate deck to deck battles with Jeff Bernard in Mack Elliott’s NM-33 and Chuck Miller in Bobby Murray’s NM-200 up front and Steve Short (NM-17) and Amy Brockson (NM-370) having their own battle a few seconds behind them. NM-33 “Mack Attack” took first with Murray’s NM-200 3 seconds behind him. This was the first time Chuck Miller had driven the NM-200 in competition, and the first time in four years that Murray’s “Lauterbach Special” had been on a race course.

The skiffs were up next and, as usual, put on a great show for the crowd. Darby’s JS-13 grabbed the lead coming out of turn one and held on for first place, with Rob Garratano’s JS-62 less than 1 second back. Trevor Kirsh’s JS-100 with Jimmie Stewart had engine problems and pulled to the infield, as did Eastern Divisional Champion Tom Pakradooni’s JS 7.

At this point the storm front came through and racing was called for the day. Several people were excited to show their pictures of the funnel cloud that appeared on the horizon. The pits that were muddy to begin with, got even worse. Race teams were very creative in finding alternate routes to get their boats back to their spot in the pits.

Saturday’s weather was better, but again there was a prediction for strong winds late in the day. The 1.5’s and 1 Litres would run their qualifiers first and then Saturday schedule would begin.
In the first attempt at the 1.5 Stock heat, Jason Browning blew over in his T-999. Jason was able to get out of the boat unassisted and was not injured. In the restart Brandon Kennedy’s T-1 opened a 14 second lead over Kasey Browning and the rest of the field. Jimmy McMullen had engine problems in Wayne Hagatha’s T-5, and failed to make the start.

The 1 Litre hydros had several boats to challenge the favorite, Jim Sechlar’s Y-1, driven by Dan Kanfoush. In the first qualifier, Joe Sovie (Y-44) drove his Accelerant to a first place finish, with Sean Bowsher in second. Kanfoush brought the Y-1 home third. Andre Rossuea’s Y-3 had a small fire in the engine compartment during the heat, Andre spent the heat bailing water into the boat to extinguish the fire, the damage was minor and he was able to compete later in the weekend.

The 2.5 Stock second qualifier saw Bobby Kennedy drive the S-88 to a first in his heat and Jimmie Shane drive the S-14 to a first in his heat with nearly identical times. Mike Hofhne and Kenny Walton (S-999) decided to leave their boats on the trailer, as they believed that their time from the first round of qualifications would be good enough to get a spot in the final. After having a DNF on Friday, Scott Meyer’s S-81 “Meyers Auto Tech” with Jesse Robertson driving ran a strong second in his qualifying heat, as did Kent Henderson in his CS-00, “Bank On It”.

Several 2.5 mod teams decided to save their equipment for the final, however Randy English’s A-52 “Fat Chance” driven by Tom Thompson still blistered the course, followed by Debbie Welte’s A-23 “Geezer Boat” driven by Mike Monahan and Don Mashburn’s A-60,Mr. Bud, driven by Nicky Pellerin. The A-600, Mr. Bud Too, driven by Dan Kanfoush broke another skid fin support bracket and returned to the pits before the start of the heat.

Like the 2.5 mods, several 5 litre teams decided to stay on the trailer and not risk missing the final. 5 Boats took to the course and four of the jumped the gun. This gave Nicky Pellerin an easy first place finish in Terry LaBlanc’s E-61.

The second skiff qualifier had JS-7 first on the course, but a gun jumping infraction gave the win to Darby’s Rapture JS-13 once again, followed by JS-100 and Burturla’s JS-1. The 1.5 stocks had Brandon Kennedy 1, followed by T-5 “Trophy Hunter” driven by Jim McMullen and T-24 , owned by Jim Dixon and driven by Kenny Walton. The 1 Litre’s had Scott Liddycoat’s Y-97 “Team Extreme” 1st, followed by Y-1 (Sechler/Kanfoush) and Y-80 (Bob Wilson/ Keith McMullen.)

The finals for the Summer Nationals could now begin. In 1.5 Litre Stocks, pre-race favorite Brandon Kennedy in his “Shameless Say What?” had a strong challenge from Kasey Browning’s T-15 “Hot Stuff” Kasey ran her fastest time of the weekend (4:39.67) to win the title by 1.5 seconds. Brandon finished second, Jim McMullen T-5 took third followed by Jim Dixon’s T-24 and Fred Benzinger’s T-18 “Legacy”.

12 2.5 stocks answered the gun for the final heat. The battle for lane selection was a chess game played by 12 players. Drivers were trolling early trying to grab lane one, some were to early and had to go around, other to late, and the desired lane was gone. Jeff Bernard showing why he is one of our top drivers, grabbed the inside lane in the “Liquid Lizard” (S-12) , nailed the start and was in front for good. Jimmy Shane (S-14)lead the pursuit. The order of finish on the course was Bernard, Shane , Kennedy (S-88) , Martin (S-33 Keen’s Sunday Money) Walton (S-999 Capitol One). However, the S-12 and S-14 did not pass tech inspection. The final order of finish is 1- Sam Horner (S-88) “Playin Again”, 2- Doug Martin (S-33), 3- Ken Walton (S-999), 4-. Alan Bush (S-711, “One More Time”), 5- Gene DeFalco/ Howie Schnabolk (S-173, “On the Edge”), 6- Tina Wilson/Scott Liddycoat (S-20, “Hot Flash), 7- Valerie Wilson/ Richard Sechman (S-54 Pink Panther). The S-12 and S-14 teams both showed that they are class acts, both on and off the water, it is not easy to be gracious when you come so close to a championship, only to have it taken away because someone made a simple mistake, but they were.

6 2’5 Mod’s it the start with Tom Thompson taking the lead in Randy English’s A-52 Fat Chance, followed by 2- Jim Aid (A-33, In Cahoots Again) ,3- Mike Monahan in Debbie Welte’s A-23 Geezerboat, 4- Chuck Miller (A-54, Whoopee) and 5- Nicky Pellerin in Don Masburn’s A-60, Mr. Bud. English’s Fat Chance did not skip a beat as it powered it’s way to the championship. The top four boats finished within a 20 second span, making this great heat to watch.

The National Mods looked to be a two boat show with NM-33 being a slight favorite with the crowd. Chuck Miller (NM-200) nailed the start and had a slight lead going into turn 1, Jeff Bernard (NM-33) was charging up the inside about 2 boat lengths back, as he rounded the entrance pin to the turn, Jeff hit some rough water and the boat stood on it’s tail, by the time Jeff had the boat settled, Miller was gone. Bernard was able to close the gap a little, but with Miller controlling the course, Bernard could not get around him. Miller held on to win by 4 seconds. As in the previous heat Steve Short and Amy Brockson were running deck to deck for the third spot, Short was able to open some distance on lap 4 to take third over all.

Nine Jersey Skiffs answered the gun for the final. JS-7 “Rolling Thunder” grabbed the early lead, but had to pull to the infield when a water line came off. Darby (JS-13, Darby’s Rapture) grabbed the lead and never looked back. Jimmie Stewart and Peg Ewancio in Trevor Kirsh’s JS-100 Summer Storm finished 2nd and Rob Garratano took third in JS-62 “Smoke on the Water.”

Once again the wind kicked up and racing was postponed until Sunday.

The 1 Litre’s had a great race with Sechler/Kanfoush taking first in Y-1 “Fast Eddy Too” by 2 seconds over Scott Liddycoat’s Y-97 “Team Extreme”. Sean Bowsher’s Y-52 “Roostertails Racing” was 2 seconds behind Scott despite trying to blow the boat over on several occasions and Keith McMullen was 1.5 seconds behind Sean in Bob Wilson’s Y 80 “Outlaw”. The top four 1 Litres ran times that were faster than half the 5 Litre and National Mod fields.

During the 5 Litre heat I was driving the rescue boat near turn one. As the pack headed for the starting line, Ken Smith said “point the boat toward the third pin, that is where it is going to be.” Sure enough, as they came through the turn, the lanes got smaller and smaller until Gordy Oakley’s E-990 had no room, rode up a couple of tails and went over. Fortunately, Gordy was not injured, and was able to ride in the JS-13 later in the day. On the restart, Jeff Bernard in his E-55, “My Way” took the lead in turn lane two and was never headed. Jim Martin (E-43, Keen’s Machine) finished second with Tom Thompson in Don Thompson’s E-816 “Batt Racing” finished third. as is often the case with the competitive five litre class there was some controversy regarding possible lane changes. Referee Don Melillo directed that all boats be sealed, and stated that instead of holding up the race for a very long time, he and assistant referee Jerry Glass would talk to the turn judges at the end of the day. After a lengthly conversation, it was determined that there was no driving infraction and the E-55 owned and driven by Jeff Bernard, was the champion. Don took time to get as much information as he could before making a final decision.

One of the highlights of the Hampton Cup Regatta is the annual soft ball game between the Flat Bottoms (skiffers) and the Hydros. Jim Robinson organizes the game each year and many of our friends are eager to display their lack of talent in this area. The Keystone Cops have nothing on us. The game started off with a broken windshield during the warmup. They hydro team was loaded with J Stock drivers and the Skiffers were just loaded. George Kennedy, Sr. was the umpire with his own special way of calling balls. (Detective Frank Drebin of the Naked Gun movies could learn a little from George). Several batters found the “resident roller” between the starting line (home plate) and turn one (first base.) Others developed a strong thirst from running the bases as they had to stop at second to take a sip of a nice cold beverage. Still others were attacked by the turn monster as they rounded the bases. It took several innings to have all 23 people in the lineup get a turn at bat. The crowd was outstanding, the heckling non stop, and very creative. A good time was had by all.

Kent Narrow Results Thanks To Jeff Ayler

The 19th annual Thunder on the Narrows was conducted on August 1 & 2, 2009 at the Kent Island Yacht Club on Hog Bay . The regatta club was the Kent Narrows Racing Association. The KNRA is a neat organization with races being run on the tough and demanding Hog Bay race course at one mile. Plus the traditional Saturday evening Crab Feast was another success with wonderful food and drink.

The KNRA Saturday finals are memorial races in 5 Litre, Jersey Speed Skiff, and Pro Stock. 5 Litre remembers Alton Pierson, Paul Sohn in Jersey Speed Skiff, and in Pro Stock James Curtis.

The Alton Pierson Memorial 5 Litre final was a dandy with four hulls answering the gun with Tom Thompson in lane one driving the E-816 Batt Boat, Chuck Miller in lane two in the E-99 The Rock, Jim Martin in lane three in the E-43 Keen’s Machine, and on the outside Leonard Outlaw III in the E-310 The Outlaw. Thompson, Miller, and Martin made it to turn one together but coming off the corner Chuck Miller took the lead with Tom Thompson in hot pursuit with Martin in third. Entering turn two on lap one with Miller in lane two and his 305 Chevy humming he had a four boat length advantage over Thompson. Miller hung on for the win by ten boats lengths over Thompson followed by Martin and Outlaw. Miller is a local pilot from Queen Anne, MD along with boat owner Billy Sewell from Centreville, MD

The Paul Sohn Memorial Jersey Speed Skiff final saw Bill Darby & Patrick Dender take charge winning wire to wire in the JSS-13 Geico Darby’s Rapture.

The James Curtis Memorial was won by Dale Hernandez, Jr. in the late James Curtis’ PS-516 Cherokee Thunder. Neat to see Dale win aboard James hull.

National Modifieds over the weekend saw Calvin Phipp’s driving Mack Elliott’s, Mack’s Out NM-33, to three wins with the only blemish coming from a DNF due to a $0.15 fuse according to Mack. Steve Short got one win and three seconds in the NM-17 getboatgear. com. Steve’s hull has run well in 2009 and he is indicating this will be his last season of driving to concentrate on getting his son involved with driving on the water too. Steve, you better keep announcing some too!!!

1 Litre saw local pilot Keith McMullen sweep the weekend in Bob Wilson’s Y-80 Leo’s Vacation Center . Two time Iraq touring American soldier D.J. Wilson had four seconds on the weekend in Valerie Wilson’s Pink Panther.

2.5 Litre stock was all Bobby Kennedy in Sam & Yvonne Horner’s Playin’ Again S-88 during the weekend. Brandon Kennedy who is a 1.5 Litre stock pilot drove in 2.5 Litre with his primary 1.5 stock hull with a 4 cylinder stock Ford in it for Kent Island . The 17 year old re-named his boat for the weekend in honor of his late great grandfather sporting the name Uno Too on the hull the same name in which the elder Kennedy raced his boats under. Mike Haley, a local driver from Centreville , MD had a steady weekend in the S-555. Christina Wilson in the first heat on Saturday caught some air and blew over her S-20. Christina was taken to a local hospital and returned to the race site Saturday evening for the Crab Feast.

In the other 5 Litre action it was all Tom Thompson winning. Chuck Miller blew the 305 in the E-99 right out of the box on Sunday and was done. Jim Martin was steady all weekend with a couple of seconds and two third place finishes.

2.5 Litres raced once over the weekend with local pilot Paul Brockson from Queenstown , MD winning in the A-37 Sonic Speed.

The final race on Sunday was the KNRA Super Challenge for the Jersey Speed Skiffs in a race for cash only. It appeared that Bill Darby and Patrick Dender aboard JSS-13 were going to be in the photo finish with Jimmie Stewart and Peg Ewancio in Trevor Kirsh’s JSS-100 for first but in the back in third David Greenlaw Jr. and Bobby Kennedy rallied from third to first on the outside in the Veri Cheri JSS-99 on the final turn, final lap to get the win and the check from KNRA President Wheeler Baker. Stewart & Ewancio were second with Darby & Dender in third.
